Converse Trainers - Gorillaz Converse
“Converse are more than shoes - the brand’s an institution, a legend that has been making footwear since 1908 and the trainer of choice for everyone from athletes to rock stars.”
Its long history of groundbreaking design, innovation and collaborations is set to continue with the new Gorillaz Converse - four reworkings of the classic Chuck Taylor inspired by each member of the band, but where did the Converse story begin?
Way back in 1908, Marquis M Converse established the brand that would soon conquer America and the world, unknowingly creating one of the most popular athletic shoe companies to grace the court, diamond or street. It was a trailblazer of modern sports footwear back then and continues this tradition today, but its history shows the influence it had on the evolution of basketball, tennis, turf and track.
In the brand’s early days, Converse quickly became the heart and soul of American sport, helping the country’s athletes to excel and earning the name of “America’s Original Sports Company”. When people think of Converse
trainers they will invariably think of the Chuck Taylor All Star, but this fan favourite’s history lies in the hoops and dunks of American basketball and revolutionised a game close to the hearts of those stateside.
Today, the Converse collection still represents its American sports heritage with sports performance, sports classics and sports lifestyle athletic footwear for men, women and children, as well as athletic-inspired apparel, but the shoe’s ascent to greatness started with one man - Chuck Taylor.
Chuck Taylor, or ‘Mr Basketball’ as he was fondly known, was the icon of the sport for nearly half a century, bringing attributes to the game such as originality, creativity and self-expression, that we associate so closely with the NBA today. His ethos was represented in the groundbreaking design and style of his namesake
Converse shoe and the Converse All Star with its original canvas and rubber complexion still stays true to that today. The Chuck Taylor name and endorsement was introduced to the global public in 1923 and is still an icon nearly 90 years on the high streets, dance floors and pavements of the 21st century.
Converse did not rest there and kept ‘Chucks’ on the feet of the great and good by using new innovative material, creative colourways, ‘Chucksprints’ and special features so the brand was constantly evolving. From the pub to the silver screen, the nightclub to the festival stage, Converse has provided the footwear to a generation of creatives, musicians, artists and fashion-conscious members of the public.
And now Converse continues its cultural significance with the launch of the
Gorillaz Converse Collection. Gorillaz was the first cartoon band and the brainchild of former Blur front man Damon Albarn - a man who did for the music world what Converse did for footwear. This new collection showcases vibrant prints that represent the eclecticism and ingenuity of the band itself and symbolises the next chapter in the Converse story. These are a must buy for any Gorillaz fan and you can find them all at your local Office store.
