The recognition may be in the form of words of praise, a pat on the back, a letter of appreciation, etc. There may also be awards, certificates, etc. Recognition may be for better output, saving in time, improving quality of products and for suggestions to do things in a better way.
Participation has been considered as a good technique for motivation. It implies physical and mental involvement of people on decision-making processes. It satisfies ego and self-esteem of persons.
They feel important when asked to make some suggestion in their field of activities. There is no doubt that most of the people know the problems they face and are also aware about their possible solutions. Participation results in motivation and knowledge that is extremely valuable for the success of any business.
Status refers to the social status of a person and it satisfies self-centered needs. A management should create some status symbols in the organization. Giving various facilities to the subordinates can achieve this.
This may include superior furniture, carpets on the floor, attachment of peons, personal assistants etc. To get these facilities a person will have to show a certain amount of performance. In some organizations competition is used as a motivator.
In this way the job is made more important and challenging for the workers. The subordinates should also be entrusted with the management functions of planning and control so far as the work is concerned. They will develop a sense of belongingness and would not feel that they are mere small parts of huge machinery.
