Is Consumerism Successful in Today’s Scenario?
“It is heartening that not all firms have closed their eyes towards such consumerism. Many business houses that are broad minded, have responded to consumers’ criticism of business in the form of improved sales service and better employee and dealer training. ”
These days, consumers have become aware and critical of various strategies and procedures adopted by business houses. This awareness has resulted in increasing consumer strength in the recent years. Consumers are organizing themselves for the protection of their interests. Such a move to better the protection offered to consumer is called consumerism.
It is a social force designed to protect consumers’ interests in the market place by organizing consumer pressure on business units. Consumer organizations can provide united and organized efforts to fight against unfair market practices and to achieve consumers’ protection.
Consumerism is a societal effort to set right this imbalance in exchange of goods and services between the seller and the buyer. Consumerism means that a consumer looks upon the manufacturer as somebody who is interested but who really does not know that what are the consumers’ realities.
Today a consumer regards the manufacturer as somebody who has not made efforts to find out consumers’ problems, who does not understand the world in which the consumer lives and who expects the consumer to be able to make distinctions which the consumer is neither willing nor able to make. A manufactures is solely concerned with his profit only.
Various unfair practices are rampant in the business sphere like fast product obsolescence, deceptive and unfair trade practices, harmful and poorly made products and unwillingness on the part of business houses to stand behind their products. In addition to this dumping too many products to choose from, over-charging the poor, reckless efforts to make quick money with no regard to humanitarian aspect in general and consumer plight in particular are also major problems of the day.
Despite such desperate developments, it is heartening that not all firms have closed their eyes towards such consumerism. Many business houses that are broad minded, shrewd and ready to accept new challenges have responded to consumers’ criticism of business in the form of improved sales service, better employee and dealer training, introduction of more factual data in advertising, unit pricing etc.
In a nutshell, consumerism means the efforts organized by consumer groups to remedy their frustration caused by the products not confirming to their expectations.
