Let’s Discuss Different Theories of Leadership in Business
“Different authors hold different views on the qualities that are considered essential for effective leadership. Some emphasize on personal attributes and traits of the leadership. Others emphasize on the actual behavior and action of the leader. ”
Efficient leadership is indispensable for any business or organization. Different authors hold different views on the qualities that are considered essential for effective leadership. Some emphasize on personal attributes and traits of the leadership. Others emphasize on the actual behavior and action of the leader. There are some who lay stress on the situation on which the leadership is to be expected.
The trait theories represent the earliest notion of leadership and until up to three decades ago this approach was very popular. There are certain personal qualities and traits, which are essential for a successful leader. The advocates of this theory are of the opinion that persons who are leaders are psychologically better adjusted to display better judgment and to engage themselves in social activities.
They seek more information, give more information, and take lead in interpreting a situation. Most of the trait theorists believe that leadership traits are inherited and in-born and these cannot be acquired by learning.
On the other hand behaviorialists emphasize on the actual behavior and actions of the leaders as against personal traits. Leadership involves interpersonal relationship between a leader and subordinates in which the behavior of the leader towards the subordinates constitutes the most crucial element.
Good behavior of leader raises the morale, builds up confidence and spirit among the team members. If there is any kind of lack of good behavior in the leader, the followers may get rid of him in the due course of time.
The situational theory emphasizes not only on personal qualities of a leader but upon the situation in which he operates. According to this theory, leadership is greatly affected by situations and the pattern of leadership is the product of a particular period. A good leader is the one who moulds himself according to the needs of a given situation.
The situational theory influenced certain researchers to focus their attention on the followers. The essence of leadership is follower ship and it is the willingness of the people to follow that makes a person leader. This theory also brings the needs and desires of the followers to the forefront. The followers will choose only that person as their business leader who will be instrumental in fulfilling their desires and aspirations
