Let’s Discuss Types Of Leadership In Business
“Though there are fixed leadership patterns or types in theory, in actuality there is always a diversified assortment of leadership traits available in any business organization.”
The term leadership style refers to the persistent behavior prototype of a leader as perceived by the people in his proximity. Every leader develops a pattern in a way he handles his subordinates or supporters in a variety of state of affairs.
The leadership style is the result of the viewpoint, character, personality and experience of the leader. It also depends upon the types of followers and situations prevailing in the business. Though there are fixed leadership patterns or types in theory, in actuality there is always a diversified assortment of leadership traits available in any business organization.
There are different types of leadership styles such as repressive leadership, free rein style leadership, democratic leadership, paternalistic leadership, egalitarian leadership etc.
In case the leader expects complete submission from his subordinates and all the decision making authority is centripetal i.e. centered in the leader only, then it is authoritarian type of leadership. No suggestion or initiative from the subordinates is entertained. The leader forces the subordinate to absorb each and everything served to him without any resistance whatsoever
On the other hand if the leadership gives full independence to its subordinates in deciding about its policies and methods, it can be termed as Laissez- faire leadership. The leaders provide help only when the subordinate require it otherwise they do not interfere in the work. This style of leadership creates self-confidence in the workers and provides them with an opportunity to grow their capacity. But it may not work under all situations and with all the workers and may bring the problem of disruptive behavior.
If the leadership acts according to the mutual approval and the judgments are made after consulting subordinates, then it is democratic type of leadership. It is a mid way between autocratic and laissez faire leadership. Subordinates are encouraged to make proposals and take initiatives. It provides inspiration to the subordinates by ensuring their involvement in the framing and acceptance of work methods. Mutual faith and confidence are also created resulting in job contentment and enhanced self-confidence of the subordinates.
If the leadership is based on the feelings and emotions of the personnel, it can be termed as Paternalistic leadership. In Paternalistic leadership, leader is like a father to his subordinates. He looks after the subordinates as a father looks after his family unit. He helps, directs and guards all his subordinates. This type of leadership has a big disadvantage that the subordinates become totally dependent upon the leader and their growth process tends to become stunted.
