Let’s Talk about Intellectual Property
“The intellectual property rights are more concerned about property than intellect because the worth of intellectual property all over the world is greater than the entire industrial production. ”
Intellectual property is new idea that has spread all over the world. In the past nobody cared about ‘patenting’ his works of art or other successes. It was considered that an artist is a divine being who spreads through his work the heavenly grace bestowed upon him by God.
Everything was property of the community and everybody was free to make use of these works and discoveries or to alter or modify them according to his or her needs. This applied to every filed of human endeavor-be it science, music or art.
The inventors were given salaries and were honored for their contribution by the state. However, with industrial revolution came the need for hiding and preserving the designs of machinery so that other industrialists were not able to reap rich profits. This was nothing else but the birth of ‘patent’ and ‘intellectual proper rights’.
Gradually, various other fields of endeavor like films, books, processes, discoveries, software etc. started talking about patents and followed them vigorously. The intellectual property rights are more concerned about property than intellect because the worth of intellectual property all over the world is greater than the entire industrial production.
Certain people allege that these rights are nothing but monopolistic tactics and should not be stretched too far. They mean to say that different ideas and works should be allowed for use in non-commercial purposes. But this is not that simple an affair as it seems to be.
In this intricate world of ours it’s very difficult to arrive at a consensus as to which activity is to be considered as commercial and which one non-commercial.
These people also contend that people and companies who have got their products patented charge too high from the customers. The software companies are often blamed of high prices for their products.
These companies on the other hand counter them by citing the money that they have spent on research and development of that particular software. This debate seems endless.
However, there is some respite for the people who are against intellectual property rights. IT revolution has made much information and knowledge freely accessible to all and the technological revolution has made it possible for the common man to compete with those companies that charge too much for their patented products.
