Management and the Human Element
“Even good control may dampen the spirit of employees if it is badly administered. ”
A business cannot run efficiently without proper management and control. Management is no child’s play and usually involves many intricate aspects than the commonly advocated ‘carrot and stick’ policy.
Employees sometimes dislike control, because they take them as restraint. The best control system enlightens employees about the positive side of control. Control helps employees in improving their performance.
The implementation part of control is very important. Even good control may dampen the spirit of employees if it is badly administered. To make control effective and useful for employees, the management should take into consideration the needs of employees too.
The employees should be aware about the expectations from them. They should be clear about the standards of performance, which are to satisfy the management. Such awareness helps employees in doing their jobs in the best way. When employees feel that controls are justifiable, they tend to support them.
The objectives of the organization should be clearly spelled out. There should be mutual interest of management and employees in attaining those objectives. The employees should be briefed about their interests in various objectives. The measures used to control the activities should be properly explained to the employees in a business venture.
When the employees are clear about various standards, these, in all probability, are sure to be properly implemented. If the employees are capable of understanding the devising and implementation of various control measures, they should be associated with this exercise at least in a partial way.
In this way the management is relieved of much botheration and employees themselves help in implementing controlling techniques. The control should be such that it is automatically adjustable with change in situations.
If quality standards of a product are changed, control should also be readjusted. Control should not be changed to reduce the standards of performance but should be adjusted as per the needs of new situations.
When there is flexibility in controls, employees usually don’t have any grievance for a long time. Flexibility should be used to improve performance standards and not the other way round.
In a nutshell, it can be said that respect for the individual should be the one of the tenets of any managing strategy.
