Minorities In India
“The human growth of a country is only possible when each and every individual feels accepted and acknowledged in the nation.”
The human growth of a country is only possible when each and every individual feels accepted and acknowledged in the nation. Mahatma Gandhi once said that civilization depends upon the treatment it extends to the minorities.
Protection of minorities must form a fundamental component of public policy. Such protection should primarily be directed towards minorities, which are humiliated by majority groups, are forbidden from doing certain activities and are not allowed to flourish their culture.
State needs to be guided to actively foster and protect the linguistic, cultural, social, religious and educational rights of minorities. For this the constitution makers of India uphold the principal of secularism and equality and provide some positive discrimination for the welfare of minorities.
Founding fathers have also provided some negative impediments against every form of discrimination, differentiation and marginalization of the minorities. Minorities in India are as dutiful, as patriotic and as submissive to the nation as the majority.
Here it is necessary to define minorities. “ Those who are less than 50% of total population are called as minorities. It may include any disadvantaged group in terms of social status, education, employment, wealth and political resources. It may be Ethnic minority, Linguistic minority, religious minority, cultural minority, caste minority, age minority and Sexual minority.
But regrettably these constitutional provisions have been abused by the political establishments for certain political ends. Political players exploit the emotions of minorities to achieve power. The opportunistic use of minorities has made tensions and conflicts more visible.
Some majority organizations are of the view that the non-Hindu people in Hindustan must adopt Hindu culture and language and must learn to respect Hindu religion. This rigidness of majority creates suspicions and doubts in the minds of minorities that is India their own motherland? Are they safe in India? Due to these doubts the loyalty of minorities trembles and the rival nations misuse them to fulfill their ulterior motives.
