Production planning and control is a key task of the production manager. He has to see that production process is appropriately decided in advance and is carried out as per plan. Production planning is the function of looking ahead, foreseeing difficulties to be faced and the likely curative steps to eliminate them.
Production control on the other hand steers and directs flow of production so that products are manufactured in the most excellent way, conform to a planned agenda and are of the exact quality. A control facilitates the task of manufacturing and sees that the whole lot goes as per the preparation.
Some techniques are useful in production planning and control. The technique of course plotting is the determination of exact path, which will be followed in manufacturing. It is the choice of the pathway from where each unit will have to pass before reaching the concluding phase.
Rout determines the most excellent and cheapest succession of processes to be followed. 2nd technique is Scheduling. It is the determining of time and date when each act is to be commenced and accomplished. The time and date for manufacturing each component is fixed in such a way that assembling for concluding products is not delayed in any manner.
3rd is dispatching or implementation. It refers to the method of actually ordering of work to be done. It involves putting the plan into result by issuing orders. It is concerned with starting the process and operations on the basis of rout sheets and schedule charts.
4th is follow up and expediting. It is related to assessment and appraisal of the work performed. This is a chief function of production control. If commodities are to be produced as per the plans then a suitable follow up of work is necessary to see whether production schedule is properly adhered to or not. In case there are any blockages then these must be removed in time.
5th point is that of inspection. The idea behind inspection is to see whether the products manufactured are of required excellence or not. It is carried out on a range of levels of production processes so that prearranged standards of quality are achieved. In case, the products are not of appropriate quality then urgent steps are taken to set things right.
