Morale is the mental state or attitude of individuals and groups, which determines their readiness to cooperate. Good morale is evidenced by employees’ passion and eagerness to achieve set objectives in organization but low morale is shown by employees’ aloofness, defiance, a feeling of dissuasion and the disliking for the job.
An employee can develop low morale because of a host of reasons. Morale of the employees will be low if some people are allowed to go Scot free, even after doing insufficient work.
Similarly, if work is inadequately divided and there is a hint of partiality, other employees may feel unconcerned for the company. Likewise, if there are considerable differences of pay among those with similar length of service and class of work, low morale is sure to set in the business.
If one employee is getting high emolument but doing less important work compared to one who is doing more important and quality work but is receiving less salary, the morale of the later is definitely going to be adversely effected. If a supervisor makes a big fuss over a little fault of the worker, the morale is definitely being undermined. Poor health is also a cause of low morale.
If a worker is not well physically or mentally it is always the cause of discomfort, especially when it is due to maladjustment in the work. Morale may be seriously affected if the lines of authority that have been established but are not adhered to.
If the superior short circuits his immediate subordinate and gives orders directly to his subordinate’s subordinate, it violates the fundamental principal of management. When this thing happens repeatedly it undermines the morale of the subordinate who is shifted to the position of a figurehead only.
When there is no chance of promotion and the employee feels that while remaining in the same organization there are no future prospects he loses the sense of belongingness and his morale tends to be low.
This usually happens in the situation where a person feels that the underlying aims of the personal advancement are only present for the superiors. He then tends to consider himself as a fool working harder only for the gratification of his superior and nothing else.
