Normally speaking, communication is not possible without the involvement of two persons. These two persons are commonly known as the receiver and the sender.

Confusion in communication always becomes the bane of any business because proper flow of information is closely linked to the profit of any business, especially in the intricate business setup of today. .
A message is the subject matter of communication, for example, the contents of the letter or speech, orders, instructions and suggestions. A communication must convey some message. Communication is much more than just what is written or spoken. The facial expression, gestures, pauses while speaking etc. communicate much more than what mere words can do.
Communication includes every thing that may be used to convey meaning from one person to another. To take more examples, movement of lips, or the wink of an eye or the wave of hands may convey more meanings than even written or spoken words.
Communication involves both information and understanding. Communication is not complete unless the receiver has understood the message properly and the sender comes to know about the reaction and response of the receiver.
Communication that results in poor understanding can’t be called effective even though it satisfies all other criteria of good communication. If the communicator is not able to evoke some response from the receiver or is not able to influence him, he is to be considered a failure in his particular purpose.
Formal communication follows the formal channels provided in the business structure. For example the managing director communicates with the departmental head, say a finance manager. Finance manager communicates to the deputy finance manager, and the deputy finance manager to accountants and so on and so forth.
Communication takes both the downward as well as the upward course by its very nature. It flows downward from a superior to subordinates and upward from assistants to superiors. It also flows between two or more persons operating at the same level of authority.
