The nature of management is universal as it is used almost in each and every aspect of our life. Ever since human beings stared living together in groups, techniques of organization and management have continuously been evolving.
It may be a school, a college, a cinema, a temple a hospital or a business, management is needed everywhere. That is why it has a very vast scope. The scope of management includes all the functions performed by managers to get things done. It also includes the various branches or functional areas of management.
These areas can be classified in one word that is POSDCORB (Planning, Organization, Staffing, Direction, Coordination, Reporting and Budgeting).
The operational aspects of business management are known as branches of management such as Production management, Material management, Purchase management, Financial management, Marketing management etc.
Production management is related with goods and services. It is the process by which goods and services are created. Production management is concerned with the planning, organizing and controlling of all activities related with the manufacturing of goods and services.
It is concerned with the decision-making relating to the processes for producing goods and services in accordance with the predetermined specifications and standards by incurring minimum costs.
It becomes the process of effectively planning and regulating the operations of that part of any business, which is responsible for actual transformation of the material into the finished products.
Material management is concerned with the determination of policies regarding procurement and disbursement of materials among the needy without any delay. It is concerned with control of materials in such a manner, as to ensure maximum return on working capital.
An effective system of internal control should be introduced to keep material costs within limits. This is possible only if a proper system of material management is introduced. Purchase management is concerned with the procurement of proper equipments, material and supplies of the right quantities, at the right prices and at the right time.
Separate purchase departments are established in almost all large concerns to keep in touch with the requirements of the production. The spending of the lion’s share of the budget comes under its purview.
