What is wrong with Pakistan

Right from independence, Pakistan has never had a stable government. It is primarily because of its policies and the thinking of its political class.

Coming to the present situation, we see that once again it is facing a situation where the government has lost its stability. Musharraf declared an end to his dictatorship and announced general elections. He imposed a state of emergency for some time so that things could be set right.

He is the same person who felt that democracy was not made for Pakistan. But he has some things to his credit. He has tried to control to some extent the militant and fundamentalist groups and has tried to bring a good name for Pakistan at the international level.

But one thing should be kept in mind that for democracy to function properly, military always has to take a secondary position. This is a practical rule that has been observed from time to time in various countries. So, even if Musharraf has resigned, the things will only improve when the military reduces its role in governing the country.

At, present Kiyani is considered as a leader with some potential. He is supposed to make fast the operations against the terrorists and the Taliban fundamentalists. On the other hand Prime Minister Yousaf Gilani is still a new man and has to take some strong decisions to prove his mettle.We all know that Pakistan and its leaders have US patronage. Now, this factor can be both a negative as well a positive point as far as democracy in Pakistan is concerned.

Pakistan should make this clear to America that no doubt disturbance in the Indian sub-continent can be of some benefit to America, but America should not forget that even America itself is under severe threat from Taliban fundamentalists and terrorists. Pakistan also should try to pacify and bring its tribal population in the main stream. Unless and until whole of this country strives and marches towards democracy, one or the other dictator would continue to rule the country.
